Bukky Oyewuwo
Misdemeanor Division Chief
Bukky Oyewuwo is a passionate advocate for justice and the Misdemeanor Division Chief at the Harris County Public Defender's Office in Houston, Texas. Since joining the HCPDO in 2015, Bukky has built a career grounded in the belief that every client deserves dedicated, high-quality representation — no matter the charge or circumstance. A proud Texas Tech alumna, she earned her J.D. from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2014 and was admitted to the Texas Bar shortly after, beginning what would become a decade-long journey of growth, leadership, and impact in public defense.
Over the years, Bukky has worn many hats at the HCPDO — from representing clients with mental health needs in the Misdemeanor Mental Health Division, to trying felony cases in Harris County's Criminal District Courts, to building systems that expanded the office's ability to serve more clients across all 16 County Criminal Courts at Law. In her current role as Division Chief, she leads a team of attorneys and staff, oversees case quality and training, and works closely with senior leadership to keep the division running at its best.
Beyond her work at the HCPDO, Bukky is a Faculty member at Gideon's Promise, where she helps train and mentor public defenders across Texas and the South — sharing her expertise in trial skills, motions practice, and the kind of client-first lawyering she has championed throughout her career. She is a firm believer in building up the next generation of defenders and fostering a legal culture rooted in accountability, learning, and compassion.
