Brittany Lacayo
Wrongful Convictions Division Chief
Brittany Lacayo serves as the Chief of the Wrongful Convictions Division, which focuses on post-conviction litigation, habeas corpus proceedings, wrongful conviction investigations, and Chapter 64 DNA testing. Ms. Lacayo joined the Harris County Public Defender's Office in April 2023. Prior to joining the PDO, Ms. Lacayo founded Lacayo Law Firm PLLC, where she practiced as a sole practitioner for nine years, handling criminal cases at the trial level, on appeal, and in post-conviction habeas corpus proceedings in State and Federal Courts. While in private practice, she served as the lead attorney in the Chapter 64 DNA proceedings that led to the exoneration of Lydell Grant, a landmark wrongful-conviction case in Harris County. Before founding her own law firm, she began her career as a graduate fellow at the Federal Public Defender's Office for the Southern District of Texas and later served as an associate at Bires, Schaffer & DeBorde from 2010 to 2014.
Over the course of her career, Ms. Lacayo has handled numerous cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and other state appellate courts. She has presented oral argument in state and federal appellate courts.
Ms. Lacayo has been recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer in Criminal Defense (2021–2023), a Texas Super Lawyers Rising Star (2015–2020), and an H Magazine Top Lawyer (2013–2022).
Ms. Lacayo has been licensed to practice law since 2010. She received her J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and her Bachelor of Science in Justice Studies, magna cum laude, from James Madison University. She is Board Certified in Criminal Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
